Chapter Fifteen

The riverside industrial complex appeared in the distance and Anthony Fuchs drove along the street that led to the grounds. The early hour proved a good idea as it looked that no cars were in the lot at the building’s entrance. He stepped out of his black Porsche and tugged on his suit jacket to straighten it. The heat had gotten off to an early start and he already felt the weight of the heavy fabric against his skin, raising his temperature.

The door opened on his arrival. “Good to see you, Mr. Fuchs. Please come in.”

“Mr. Melrose. Thank you for getting out of bed early. I thought we should go through the scheduled arrivals to avoid any issues tonight.”

“Of course. I have coffee in my office. Follow me and we’ll run through everything.”

Fuchs followed him through the empty corridors and to his office. “I was contacted yesterday with an update. While we haven’t located our stray dog yet, we are getting close.”

Melrose walked into his office. “It was an unwise move on his part. Surprising too.” He poured two cups of coffee and handed one to Fuchs.

“Thank you. People think it’s easy being on top. But I’ll tell you one thing, when you’re on top, you’re always playing defense. Because of the current situation, I’ve promised our partners that I would oversee this next transfer to ensure nothing goes wrong.” He sipped on the mug. “Before we go around back, tell me how you’re progressing on your end.”

“All is going as planned. We should start receiving up-to-the-minute information as of today.” Melrose bared a thin-lipped grin. “We should go back. I’ll show you what we have set up to not only expedite the transfer but ensure its security.”

Melrose opened the door to the vast warehouse where stacked pallets lined the walls. Shrink wrapped boxes and what looked like machine parts rested on shelves. “The shipment will arrive at Dock 8 at 12:45am. According to the partners, there will be 10 coming in.”

“And I have trucks ready for transfer from here,” Fuchs added.

“What about the authorities?” Melrose asked. “The heat could get intense in light of everything.”

“I’ve been shoring up our support in recent days. Between what you’ve been able to accomplish and help on my end, we are getting close to plugging up our leaks. We have to ensure this goes well. There is far too much at stake.”
